Miyajima Wooden Turner Spatula
A wooden turner spatula from Miyajima, an island famed in Hiroshima for its traditional wooden spatula craft. Made from cherry blossom wood that is local to the Hiroshima prefecture.
Great for flipping okonomiyaki (a Hiroshima food speciality), steak or whatever you desire to flip.
We are honored to be working with a Miyajima company established in 1890, now led by its 4th generation shokunin (craftsperson).
In 1800 a Buddhist monk had a dream of Benzaiten, one of the 7 Japanese Gods who symbolizes fortune and wealth. She is normally depicted holding a biwa (a pear-shaped stringed instrument). The monk was inspired to make a rice spatula from local wood in the approximate shape as the biwa.
Since then, the wooden tools from Miyajima have become a symbol of fortune and good luck, and people from Japan and abroad come to Miyajima to buy them.
